Recording Violin & Flute Duo: Air and Strings in Balance

Air Meets Strings

The violin speaks through bow and string. The flute speaks through air and breath. Recording these two together means capturing two fundamentally different languages of sound and blending them into one conversation.

At Jinny's Music Studio, we specialize in this blend, using a 6 to 8 microphone array and adjustable room acoustics to balance string clarity with flute resonance.

Mic Setup

For the flute, a small-diaphragm condenser placed close captures detail, a large-diaphragm condenser placed off-axis adds body, and a room microphone picks up the air around the instrument. For the violin, a small-diaphragm condenser and a ribbon microphone placed close capture clarity, a large-diaphragm condenser adds warmth, and a stereo pair provides spatial width.

A shared stereo pair ties both instruments together into a single chamber perspective, so the duo sounds like two players in one room rather than two separate recordings.

Acoustic Tools

Movable reflectors sweeten the flute's overtones and brighten the violin's highs. Diffusers scatter resonance so the blend does not turn harsh in the upper registers, and a floating floor grounds the sound, giving the duo a stable balance.

Session Philosophy

Baroque repertoire may demand intimacy and clarity, while French Romantic works often benefit from shimmer and atmosphere. Our philosophy is to adapt the microphone layering and acoustics to the repertoire, ensuring the blend feels natural.

Why Jinny's Duo Sessions Stand Out

Movable acoustic treatment allows us to tune brightness and warmth as the players perform. Multi-mic layering ensures clarity without sacrificing resonance, and the oak and maple surfaces warm the tone naturally.

Final Notes

Recording violin and flute requires capturing bow, breath, and blend. At Jinny's Music Studio, our mic strategies and acoustic design create duo recordings that feel both intimate and expansive.
