Private Violin Lessons with Walt Schumann
Build a strong foundation and learn to make music with purpose through private violin lessons with Walt Schumann, a German-trained violinist, violist, and conductor with 15+ years of teaching experience across the Bay Area. Walt currently serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor of Pleasant Hill Academy, and has taught violin and viola at Artis School of Music, Music Land School, and Mountain View Academy. He performs with the Diablo Symphony and Livermore Symphony, and, trained as a luthier by his family, can repair and maintain your child's instrument as well as teach it.

About Violinist Walt Schumann
Walter von Schnellbacher Schumann is a violinist, violist, conductor, and educator whose musical formation is rooted in the distinguished European traditions of string performance and orchestral training. He began studying violin at the age of four and a half in Düsseldorf, Germany, within a family deeply immersed in professional music and the arts.

Both of Walter's parents are musicians and have worked internationally as cultural ambassadors, fostering from an early age an appreciation for music as both an artistic discipline and a means of cultural connection. He was also raised within a family of internationally renowned luthiers, gaining firsthand knowledge of the craftsmanship, acoustical principles, construction, care, and restoration of fine string instruments. This rare combination of musical and instrument-making traditions continues to inform his approach to performance and pedagogy.

Walter pursued advanced musical studies in Europe, with his education and professional formation extending across Düsseldorf, Dresden, and Leipzig, Germany; Verona, Italy; and Sofia. He holds dual Master's degrees in Violin Performance and Viola Performance, together with advanced studies in Choral and Orchestral Conducting.

As an educator, Walter has more than 15 years of teaching experience and has worked with violin and viola students throughout the Bay Area at institutions including Artis School of Music, Music Land School, and Mountain View Academy. He currently serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor of Pleasant Hill Academy, where his responsibilities encompass orchestral and ensemble development, conducting, and individual instrumental instruction.

His pedagogical approach draws upon the German, Italian, and Old Russian schools of string playing, integrating disciplined technical development with refined tone production, articulation, phrasing, musical expression, and stylistic awareness. Walter places particular emphasis on developing the complete musician rather than merely training mechanical proficiency. Students are encouraged to cultivate musical independence, creativity, attentive listening, intellectual curiosity, and an authentic artistic voice.

Alongside his teaching and conducting responsibilities, Walter maintains an active performing career, appearing with ensembles including the Diablo Symphony and Livermore Symphony. His students range from beginning instrumentalists to advanced performers preparing for All-State auditions, competitions, auditions, and further collegiate or conservatory study.

At Jinny's Music Studio, Walter brings together his experience as a performer, conductor, educator, and member of a distinguished instrument-making tradition. His aim is to provide each student with a strong technical foundation, a sophisticated understanding of musical style, and the artistic discipline necessary to grow into a confident, expressive, and independent musician.
Teaching Philosophy
Walt's approach draws on the German, Italian, and Old Russian schools of violin playing, blending their different strengths into a technique built around the individual student rather than a single fixed method. He believes solid fundamentals—posture, bow control, and intonation—create the freedom for real musical expression, not the other way around.

Walt works closely with each student to build a personalized practice routine, adjusting his approach as they grow rather than following a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Students preparing for auditions, competitions, or ensemble placement work alongside those simply building a lifelong relationship with their instrument, each supported at their own pace.
